Mammootty starrer Turbo opened to a whopping Rs 6.2 crore on Thursday. The film, however, might see a drop in its day two collection as the Malayalam action comedy has earned around Rs 2.71 crore, as per early estimates by Sacnilk.
On Day 1, Turbo had earned Rs 17.3 crore at the worldwide box office. The makers took to X to share, “#Turbo grossed 17.3 crores worldwide on Day 1! 🎉 Such a humongous opening across the globe, thanks to our incredible audience for the endless love & support 🙏❤️🤗.”
Turbo marks the veteran star’s third release this year after Bramayugam and Abraham Ozler, where he was seen in an extended cameo alongside Jayaram. Despite the anticipated drop, the film has already managed to outdo the two-day collection of Mammootty’s other 2024 releases.
Turbo, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 70 crore, revolves around Jose, played by Mammootty, who is forced to relocate to Chennai from Kerala. While Jose reaches Chennai, a bunch of surprises await him such as the character of Raj B Shetty and others. The film, upon its release, garnered praises for Mammootty’s performance at the age of 72. However, the movie’s poor script failed to keep the audience hooked.

In his review, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote, “From the outset, Turbo suffers from poor writing, exacerbated by unimpressive moments and “jokes” that mostly don’t land. Despite the instances being all too familiar, none manage to leave an impression or evoke excitement, except for the stunt sequences, which owe their success entirely to the technical team, especially stunt master Phoenix Prabhu. As the film progresses, writer Midhun Manuel Thomas’ script continues to decline, with his attempts to balance mass, comedy and drama mostly backfiring due to consistently weak writing.”
Turbo, directed by Vysakh, is written by Midhun Manuel Thomas. Apart from Mammootty, the film also stars Kannada actor Raj B Shetty and Telugu comedian Sunil, marking their debut in Mollywood. Anjana Jayaprakash is also seen in a pivotal role in the Mammootty starrer. The movie is produced by the leading star himself under his banner Mammootty Kampany.
This year has been eventful for Mollywood with the success of films like Premalu, Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham and Aavesham. The movies went on to enter the highest-grossing Malayalam films list. It needs to be seen if Mammootty’s latest film manages to make the cut.
