Dulquer Salmaan’s highly anticipated film King Of Kotha (KoK) showed no sign of improvement as it began its first weekend. Initial estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk reveal that the movie earned Rs 2.25 crore in India on Saturday, August 26. Since its release on Thursday, August 24, the film has amassed a cumulative total of Rs 11.70 crore in India.
The box office journey of King Of Kotha began on a subdued note, garnering Rs 6.85 crore on Thursday, followed by Rs 2.6 crore on Friday. Despite expectations of a stronger performance over the first weekend, the Dulquer-starrer struggled and only managed to secure Rs 2.25 crore on Saturday. The film exhibited a 23.19 per cent Malayalam occupancy and 15.64 per cent Telugu occupancy. It, however, witnessed a high 33.14 per cent Tamil occupancy.
KoK is facing fierce competition from two other notable Malayalam releases – the action film RDX and Nivin Pauly’s Ramachandra Boss and Co – both released on August 25. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, RDX accumulated Rs 2.10 crore on Saturday, intensifying the competition with the Dulquer Salmaan movie.
Directed by debutant Abhilash Joshiy, King Of Kotha unfolds a tale set in the fictional locale of Kotha in 1996, near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, known for its criminal activities.
Anandu Suresh of Indianexpress.com awarded the film three stars, noting, “With Raju’s entrance, King of Kotha‘s tone and pace shift dramatically into an action-packed mode. However, even amidst the action, the plot struggles to engage, progressing without a clear direction. Despite attempts to present touching moments, these fall short due to a lack of impact and quality in the script.”
