The Vaccine War, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, released in theatres on Thursday and the film had a very slow start at the box office on its opening day. Vivek has previously directed The Kashmir Files, which was one of the big hits of 2022, so it was expected that his new film would follow suit. On the first day, The Vaccine War made Rs 1.3 crore at the box office, as per industry tracker Sacnilk .

In comparison, The Kashmir Files made Rs 3.55 crore at the box office on its opening day, as per Bollywood Hungama. But over its first weekend, the film managed to make Rs 27.15 crore and ended its box office run with Rs 252.90 crore. It is yet to be seen in The Vaccine War can repeat the success of The Kashmir Files, which was declared tax free by many state governments.

The Vaccine War has been promoted as India’s first ‘bio-science’ film as it tries to present the story of the scientists who developed India’s Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin, during the pandemic. The film has received mixed reviews from the critics but it appears so far that the audience is not too keen on the film.

The Vaccine War released alongside Fukrey 3, which made Rs 8.5 crore at the box office. The box office has been dominated by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan ever since its release on September 7 and amid such competition, it seems rather difficult that The Vaccine War will be able to make its place. Jawan, even after almost three weeks in the theatres, made Rs 5.50 crore on its 22nd day. This takes the film’s nett collection in India to Rs 581.43 crore.

In an earlier interview, Vivek claimed that people were being paid money to not talk about his film. He told Galatta Plus, “These days, if you just write the name Jawan, at least 10,000 people will come and review it. People do so much YouTube-ing now. Yet, when such an important film like The Vaccine War is coming, and that too after I delivered a Rs 350-crore movie which also created a significant impact, nobody has reviewed it because money is being paid and there’s an embargo that nobody should utter our names.”
