Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe in 1994 and she became the first Indian woman to win the title. Sushmita was just 18 when this moment changed her life and in a recent chat, Sushmita recalled how her training as Miss Universe taught her discipline and shaped her work ethic for life.
During a session Rising Above The Odds on Shipra Neeraj’s YouTube channel, Sushmita recalled that after she won Miss Universe at 18, she was taught she must honour her work commitments, no matter what the circumstances might be. She shared, “At the age of 18 there, I was taught that even if you have a fever, cold, fractured leg, or anything else, there will always be three doctors and oxygen cylinders in your limousine, but you will never say no to work. We will always go to work and honour our commitments.”
Sushmita recalled that it was during this period that she got chickenpox, malaria and a few other illnesses during her time in the US, but she never stopped working. “At 18 years of age, I was down to chickenpox in the US. What a way to start your Miss Universe journey! I went through a very trying time and then went to work every day after that. I had a 104 fever, Malaria, and every Indian problem that you can imagine in the US, and I went to work every day. That taught me it’s doable,” she said.
Sushmita has been a part of the entertainment industry since he 1990s. She was last seen in the third season of her web series Aarya.
