Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty has a word of advice for youngsters: choose your heroes wisely. The actor on Monday penned a long note, detailing the people who have influenced his life. In a note posted on LinkedIn, Shetty said that he wanted to write in detail about his life’s “biggest influences”, as the choice of heroes determine the journey one would like to emulate.

The star said the people he has mentioned have been like “teachers to me” and have had the “greatest impact” on him, changing the way he looked at life at the start of his professional career. Shetty mentioned people like megastar Amitabh Bachchan and cricketer Sunil Gavaskar among those whose journey, principles and conduct have had a profound impact on his life.

“My cousin, Sudhir Shetty – lost his mum as a toddler, & his father at 21. With no guidance, his life could’ve gone haywire. Instead, Anna took life by the horns. Starting from nothing he built an empire in the hospitality industry. He defied traditions & became among the first in our community to venture into real estate. Despite tremendous success, he remained grounded.

“Anna gave back to the community and was the binding force in our family teaching us that family is above all else. My devotion to our kuldevi came from looking at him. He’s a living example of why respect is more important than money or fame. Sudhir Anna probably never knew it, but after Dad, he was my biggest hero,” the actor wrote.

Suniel Shetty also mentioned his martial arts teacher Sensei Pervez Mistry. Shetty said Mistry taught him everything he knows about discipline, respect and never giving up. The actor said Mistry showed him how to be “humble in success and gracious in defeat.”

“People call me Anna, but it was he who taught me what it’s like to be an older brother when he asked me to help him train some students. I have the fondest memories of practising my kathas under his watchful eyes and thank him for the calm stillness he brought out in me. Everything I know about honour, came from him,” he added.

Writing about Sunil Gavaskar, Shetty said he is “one of the best batsman to have ever played the game.” The actor wrote that Gavaskar proved that size didn’t matter when he “took on the big names” and marvelled at how he “conquered the most ferocious bowlers.”

“Fought hard and silently, evoked my earliest sense of patriotism. Even as a commentator, he took on the big names when they spoke against ours, like he was playing for India long after he retired. He made sticking to the basics look so cool, and that played a big role in how I’ve conducted my life. Even after all these years, I can only blush every time I meet him,” he added.

The actor then mentioned Amitabh Bachchan and wrote, “All of us tried to be like him.” Shetty said it is unreal the way the megastar conducts himself despite the kind of respect he commands. The two worked with each other in Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante.

“He’s a father figure to me, and I love his family like my own. He’s gracious and always makes it a point to appreciate good work. Even now, he’ll be the first one to wish me my birthday at midnight. He may not turn up for every celebration but has a way of making sure he’s there for you during hard times. He’s built a legacy that no one else ever will. They don’t make men like him anymore,” he wrote.

Suniel Shetty concluded the post by writing that it is only when one seeks the good in others, that one is able to find the good in ourselves. “The people you look up to during your formative years will impact your values and ambitions, which in turn will define the course of your life and career. So, choose wisely,” he added.
