Director Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is riding on positive word of mouth from audiences and critics alike. After registering an impressive total over the weekend, the film held its ground on its first weekday as well. It earned Rs 7.50 cr (early estimates) on Monday, reported industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings the film’s total collection to Rs 53.40 cr in four days.
The romantic comedy-drama, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi, started its theatrical run with Rs 11.10 cr on Friday. Though it was not an impressive start for a film mounted on such a big scale, it gained momentum over the weekend and collected Rs 16.05 cr on Saturday and Rs 18.75 cr on Sunday. The film has a clear run till August 11, when Gadar 2 will be released.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani had a better Monday than this year’s other hits, Vicky Kaushal’s Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (Rs 4.14 cr) and Kartik Aaryan’s Satyaprem Ki Katha (Rs 3.90 cr). But it is trailing behind The Kerala Story (Rs 10.03 cr), Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 10.17 cr ), and of course, Pathaan (Rs 26.50 cr), which remains the highest Bollywood earner of the year to date.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh believes the film needs to “stay strong on remaining weekdays” to have a profitable run in theatres.
The film revolves around the comically different Rani Chatterjee and Rocky Randhawa, who decide to live with each other’s families for three months to see if they are compatible with them or not. The film is getting love from the audience. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently revealed that he watched Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani twice. He shared his view on the film on Instagram as he wrote, “Best @karanjohar film by far . He never leaves his world but he also does not hold back any punches. Also, it’s the second KJo film that I bought the tickets for 🙈that too twice , and sending everyone that trusts me to go see . Some super writing , a top of form @ranveersingh , ever so brilliant @aliaabhatt and their sparkling chemistry.”
Going forward, the film is expected to end its opening week at the box office with a collection of Rs 70 cr. It will enter the Rs 100 cr club in its second week, predicted Bollywood Hungama.
