‘Sholay’, India’s iconic film ever was released during the country’s most politically turbulent time – Emergency – the imposition of which severely curtailed many filmmakers’ creative freedom.
‘Sholay’ too had to face the wrath of the censor board for shooting a scene that showed Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) killing Gabbar (Amjad Khan). The censors felt that depicting such vigilante violence would vitiate the atmosphere and disallowed director Ramesh Sippy from retaining that scene. Sippy finally had to reshoot the climax with a different ending that showed Gabbar being taken away by the police.

Speculations were rife during the period that Amitabh Bachchan had apparently used his influence with the Gandhis to facilitate the smooth release of ‘Sholay’. However, he denied the buzz.
Speaking at an event held to mark the 40th anniversary of the movie, Big B said. “No. I didn’t use any influence. The decision was taken by censor board then that stunt scenes shouldn’t have sequences that exceed 90 feet. Also, we couldn’t show scenes depicting taking law into our own hands. These were the instructions issued by the Censor Board. Hence Rameshji(Sippy) had to change the scene where Thakur who originally kills Gabbar to the one where he(Gabbar) is handed over to the police.”
