The film has a catchy title. You go in with a bit of hope, given that director Mudassar Aziz’s previous ‘Khel Khel Mein’ had a few nice moments, but that one was a remake. Here it has been written by the director, and you encounter, over two-and-a-half hours, tropes, flat scenes, and characters who come and go.
Which is a pity because the lead characters appear to have taken their jobs seriously. It is no surprise that the two ladies playing romantic rivals, Bhumi Pednekar as Prabhleen Dhillon, and Rakul Preeti Singh as Antara Khanna, make you look. Plus, and this is a surprise, Arjun Kapoor as Ankur Chaddha isn’t half bad as the hapless guy stuck between the two loves of his life. They just needed a better film.
This is the kind of film that tells you why Bollywood is where it is. You take your stars, and then stuff the film with a supporting cast which works as a buffering collection of one-liners. The guy who does a fair job of delivering punchlines is an actual stand-up comic (Harsh Gujral), who plays the hero’s BFF. He’s called ‘Lajpat Nagar ka langoor’: bro, the film is set in Delhi. Shakti Kapoor’s background sound is his trademark Aaaooo. One of the plot points involves a bump-on-the-head and amnesia. I’m going to stop here, but you get the point.

Even after staring at empty theatres despite starry presence because the canny public has smelled a rat, no one seems to understand that constructing flicks like they used to in the ’80s and ’90s will not do. It hasn’t done, especially in the last few years.
Finally, in the last few minutes, the film justifies its title. But who’s going to sit through the rest of it? Only your long-suffering film critic.
