R Madhavan has been a part of the movies since the 1990s and in the last three decades, the actor has seen the evolution of the film industry, as well as the mainstream movies. In fact, one of Madhavan’s most popular films, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, has been debated by the younger generation for its normalisation of stalking and lying. In a new interview, Madhavan said that he wants to work with newer directors who aren’t restricted by the “filmyness” of the movies, and are making films that reflect India’s growth story. He also spoke about how the image of Indian men has changed abroad with white women perceiving them differently.

In a chat shared on BookMyShow’s YouTube channel, Madhavan said that until a few years ago, when an Indian visited an international country, white women would be wary of him as they would think that he was there to hit on them. He insisted that this wasn’t the case anymore and said that white women now flock around an Indian man as they assume that he would be a high profile entrepreneur.

“When we used to go abroad and go to a bar, all the white women would look at us like we were there to hit on them. Now, it is such that when an Indian enters a space, four white women walk towards us thinking we are some entrepreneur and they want to say hello. I have not seen that Indian in the movies yet,” he said and added that he wants to see this version of Indian men in the movies.

Talking about his aspiration of working with new directors, he said that since he has a few years of experience in his pocket, he wants to combine it with a director’s refined version of storytelling. “The thing that is getting in my way right now is the filmyness of the industry in terms of the way they think. They all are making stories to please their mentors,” he said.

Madhavan will next be seen in De De Pyaar De 2. He is looking forward to the release of Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar after that. This year, he has already appeared in Kesari Chapter 2, Aap Jaisa Koi, Hisaab Barabar and Test.
