Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao may have parted ways as far as their marriage is concerned, but as filmmakers continue to be a great team, collaborating on scripts, making films and producing them. Currently, busy promoting her directorial Laapataa Ladies, which is produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Production (APK) and Kindling Productions, Kiran, who is directing a film after 14-year hiatus, revealed that the it was actually Aamir who got this story at a screenwriting competition in 2018. The director then decided to helm it after a bit of rewriting. While the Dangal actor has  been fully supportive of ex-wife Kiran during the process of directing and producing the Laapataa Ladies, he wasn’t quite impressed  with the name of her production company — Kindling Productions. The comedy-drama follows the hilarious chaos that unfolds when two young brides accidentally switch places on a train journey through rural India in 2001.

While speaking to Film Companion, Kiran shared, “Aamir doesn’t like the name at all. He was like ‘Kiran Rao Productions hona chahiye tha. Yeh paisa naan hai Kindling?” The director added that she liked the name because she can connect to it. Divulging more, she added, “I love the idea that kindling is not just the verb of kindling the fire but it’s also the noun — the dry material that makes fire. It symbolises  our little creatures who are making these stories that we interested in creating. I connect with the name because I always  wanted something that had ‘kind’ in it. I wanted to tell stories that had kindness in them and made films that aspired kindness and embody the quality.”

Kiran who directed Dhobi Ghat in 2010, says it was generous of Aamir to let her and her team produce Laapataa Ladies under his banner. “He’s been highly supportive of whatever I do and whatever I make and I think in some sort of spiritual emotional way, Il’l never leave AKP.  I’m still a director of the company. In that sense, I’ve not cut those strings at all,” said Kiran underscoring that fact that Aamir understood the need for her to have a space to  put all her efforts into making what had been developing for the last decade.

Written by Biplab Goswami and Sneha Desai, with additional dialogue by Divyanidhi Sharma, the film stars Ravi Kishan and Pratibha Ranta as the leads, supported by debutants Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Srivastav, and Kanupriya Rishimum.

“All these stories that I’ve been writing and developing over the years series, I feel, AKP may not have the bandwidth to make it. However, when we do finally write our stories, is among the first people we pitch these stories to…. maybe if he wants to make them. I don’t feel like so much of being in the shadow but look at it like a support system and backup. Aamir would never make something he’s not interested in, for instance, he’s not so keen on making series,” Kiran shared. She disclosed that the actor is always there to read and listen to her. “There are a couple of features that I’m interested to make which he really likes. Having said, now it’s my chance to test my wings and ideas you and I am excited about them. I want to have a little fun and Aamir has been very understanding  about it,” she added.

While Aamir has given Kiran the ‘space’ to produce and direct Laapataa Ladies which is releasing on March 1, the actor is involved in  the process and is always there to root for the team.  From being present at the press conferences to sporting Laapataa Ladies T-shirt, he always around to cheer on them without overshadowing the cast. “There aren’t any downsides to having an Aamir Khan in then frame with you. The actors in Laapataa Ladies are beyond delighted to have him and it is such a compliment. He genuinely adores them and he thinks they’re great. He speaks about them and for them at all press conferences. The cast is also very happy because it is a small film and whatever we can do to get people to know watch, helps and Aamir certainly does help there.  He says, ‘March 1 is when we are coming, so visit your cinema theatres and don’t turn on your TVs,” said Kiran.
