Anyone who works with Amitabh Bachchan has only words of praise for him, and not just as a performer but also a supportive and secure co-star. Kay Kay Menon, who shared space with the thespian in Sarkar and Deewar, in a recent interview narrated how Big B made efforts to put him in the limelight.
In an interview with Lallantop, Kay Kay Menon spoke about the dining table scene where Amitabh Bachchan’s character confronts his character. The father-son duo have a showdown with Kaykay storming out, pushing his plate away. He shared that they improvised quite a bit in the scene and it was cleared by the director.
“I came back in my room, and was having lunch when the assistant came up and said Ramu is calling us back. I was surprised that he wanted to shoot again, as that’s not how he works. It was only when I asked him what went wrong did he tell me it was done on Amitabh ji’s suggestion,” he said in Hindi.
While the team had finished the shoot with a 3-camera set up, Big B suggested a camera placed behind him favouring Kay Kay. The over-the-shoulder shot was to capture his close-up as he performed the intense scene. “‘Don’t you want to see what the boy has done?’ Amit ji told Ramu. That’s when he decided to shoot the scene again. It was done to favour me,” Kay Kay shared.
The Special Ops actor could not stop lauding the senior actor as he spoke about working with him. Calling him ‘fantastic’, Kay Kay said, “Jis tarah ka passion hai unka… adhboot passion hai (He has a remarkable passion). He rehearses like a newcomer, is so inquisitive, and is an inspiration for generations to come. The position that he is today, he deserves it all and more.”
Sarkar released in 2005 and also featured Abhishek Bachchan, Supriya Pathak, Katrina Kaif and Tanisha Mukherjee among others. The politics-based family drama spawned two sequels: Sarkar Raj (2008) and Sarkar 3 (2017). It was said that the film was deeply influenced by Francis Ford Coppola’s Hollywood classic The Godfather.
