Bollywood actor Kajol clocked 32 years in the industry on Wednesday and to celebrate the milestone, the 49-year-old shared a video from the mahurat shot of her debut film, Bekhudi. Interestingly, the clip features Saif Ali Khan, who was initially cast as the male lead before being replaced by Kamal Sadanah. The video, of a young Kajol and Saif dancing on the stage, has taken their fans on a nostalgic trip.
Sharing the video, Kajol expressed her gratitude for the journey, writing, “32 years to F and I’m thankful to say that I still have the same concerns and the same confidence #32yearsofbekhudi #thebeginning (sic).”
Kajol, who made her debut at the age of 18, in an earlier interview with Mid-Day, said that she was offered the role during her visit to photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha’s studio. She described the opportunity as “a big dose of luck”. While the film was lucky for Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, who was originally set to play Rohit, was thrown out of the film by director Rahul Rawail, who called him “unprofessional”.
Saif, who later made his debut with the Yash Chopra film Parampara the following year, had candidly spoken about being replaced by Kamal Sadanah as Rahul Rawal thought he was not “showing enough interest” in work. Saif, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, while reminiscing about shooting for a song in the film, accepted that he struggled with his expressions. “I had to tear through fake cobwebs and emerge, singing a line that went, ‘Chaahat Ki Raahon Mein, Kyun Itna Darti Hai’. It was not easy because my expression had to change as I went from ‘chaahat ki raahon mein’ to ‘kyun itna darti hai,” he shared.
The Omkara actor admitted that the “shot was appalling” because he had just returned from England and wasn’t at the top of his game as far as his acting was concerned. “I might just about pull it off today, but, back then, straight out of a boarding school in England, I was petrified. I must have performed really badly because soon after, Rahul Rawail threw me out of the film, complaining I wasn’t showing enough interest. That shot, I must admit, was particularly appalling.”
During his appearance on Koffee With Karan, alongside his mother and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, Saif recalled being thrown out of Bekhudi. “Well, actually Rahul Rawail had signed Kamal Sadanah first. And then replaced him with me, thinking perhaps that this kind of casting is a little… I did not want to blame him. Perhaps, he did chuck me out of the movie because he found my attitude… And he said, ‘You are quite good. People will think it’s because you are not good. But it’s because I want you to be more committed and more professional.’ Which I think I was, but he did not think so.”
Saif further revealed that after his exit from the film, other movies offers also dried up. The actor shared that Rahul had warned him that “nobody is going to work with you”. “He was a bit sadistic, I must say. Because he kind of enjoyed that,” Saif Ali Khan added.
On the show, Sharmila Tagore also opened up about making attempts to convince Rahul Rawail to take Saif Ali Khan back in the film, but the director had already made the decision of not recasting. Two years later, Kajol and Saif starred in 1994 film, Yeh Dillagi, which also featured Akshay Kumar.
