Actor, director, and producer made his directorial debut in 2001 with Dil Chahta Hai. At the age of 25, Farhan Akhtar managed to deliver a film that went on to become a cult classic for the millennials. Recently, during a conversation with MidDay, Farhan revealed that Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan were not his first choice for the film. He rather wanted to cast Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan along with Akshaye Khanna. Farhan also recalled using a real-life heartbreak story in the film.
Farhan Akhtar revealed that just 10 days before the film went on floors, Saif Ali Khan had decided to back out of the film. A few weeks back on Aap ki Adalat, Farhan had shared how all actors were crazy about starring in films with love triangles, and Saif was also offered one, as a result of which he was contemplating dropping out of Dil Chahta Hai. “He called me and said he got a film which was a love triangle, and he wanted to do it, we were all heartbroken. We called for an emergency meeting, and Aamir was also there. We were discussing how to convince Saif to do the film. We somehow convinced him, Aamir told him if he didn’t do Dil Chahta Hai, he would make the biggest mistake of his career,” Farhan recalled.
Farhan said the dream cast in his head was very different for Dil Chahta Hai. He wanted to cast Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan, with Akshaye Khanna. “In that moment and at that time, I remember very clearly, I had this dream cast in my head that I wanted but didn’t happen, which was Akshaye Khanna, Hrithik Roshan, and Abhishek Bachchan. It was a young film about these three young guys. When I was writing, the two of them had not even debuted yet. Akshaye had, but Hrithik and Abhishek had not debuted. I knew they were acting in their first films. I knew Abhishek was doing Refugee, and I knew Hrithik was doing Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. So I thought it would be amazing to get these three guys together.”
Farhan had earlier revealed that both Hrithik and Abhishek had refused the film. “I never thought Aamir would say yes. I had approached almost everybody, and no one wanted to do a multi-hero film. Everyone wanted to do a film with a love triangle. When I had no choice, I went to Aamir, who asked me to make the film in English. He said he wanted to hear the script again after three months, but then he got busy, and eight months passed by,” Farhan said.
Finally, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna featured in the classic. Farhan Akhtar also revealed that he used many anecdotes from an unfinished book in this film. Pointing out one of them, he said, “At one point, I suffered some serious heartbreak in Goa. And I remember I had to drive back all alone. We had driven there together, but I had to drive back alone. I know what that very painful journey of driving back from Goa alone is like, which I made into a funny thing when Saif had to come back. So little bits and pieces like that were in the film.”
On the acting front, Farhan Akhtar was recently seen in 120 Bahadur, the film received great reviews and has been performing decently at the box office.
