Farida Jalal has been a part of some of the most popular films of Hindi cinema. Be it Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, she was a part of the movies that came to define the 90s era. In a recent chat, Farida recalled how she was cast for both these films and said that she knew during the making that these movies were going to be classics.
Farida, in a chat with Rajshri Unplugged, shared that she was shooting in Hyderabad when she got a call from Yash Chopra who told her that Aditya Chopra was set on casting her for the role of Kajol’s mother in DDLJ. As soon as she came back to Mumbai, she heard Aditya’s narration and immediately said yes. Speaking about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, she recalled meeting Karan on DDLJ’s set where he was the associate director.
“When he was an AD on DDLJ, that’s when I met him. He told me, ‘I’m making my film and you have to be in that,'” she recalled. Farida said that when she heard the narration of his film, she teared up. “When he came and narrated me the story, I teared up during the narration,” she recalled.
Farida Jalal was also a part of Karan’s second film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham playing Dayi Jaan. She shared that he later offered her the role of Jaya Bachcan’s mother-in-law in Kal Ho Naa Ho as well but since the two actors played contemporaries in K3G, she felt that the audience might not accept her playing Jaya’s mother-in-law. Later, Sushma Seth was cast in that role.
Recalling those memories, Farida then declared that DDLJ and KKHH were the best works of Aditya and Karan, respectively. “I still feel Adi’s best was DDLJ and Karan’s best was KKHH. They could never make better films than that,” she said.
Karan Johar recently returned to direction with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The director has received a lot of appreciation for his interpretation of the modern Indian family in the film.
