Shweta Tripathi Sharma is on a roll. With two of the web’s most popular shows, Mirzapur and Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, returning with new seasons in 2024, the actress has had an incredible year. But she’s not resting on her laurels. With Mirzapur being adapted into a film and the third season of Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein in the works, Shweta is gearing up for an even bigger couple of years ahead.
In this interview with SCREEN, Shweta opens up about the latest developments on these highly anticipated projects and shares her insights on navigating a diverse acting career that has seen her play a wide range of roles, from Masaan to Haraamkhor and now, her popular web shows.
“2024 has been bohot hi badhiya (great). I have learned a lot. When you work through the year, when you are building your work brick by brick, that learning is very important, it grounds you. This time, with Mirzapur and Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, getting on top of the trends of two of the biggest platforms in the world, when you see yourself on the hoardings, it’s a different feeling. I come from a place where I have done a lot of independent work, independent cinema, which is driven by purpose and intent, so when you get to reap these benefits also, it feels very good. I love seeing myself on the hoardings, there is no denying that and I really cherish that because the more popular you get, the more powerful you get and I can translate that power into the stories that I want to tell. Even Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein and Mirzapur, I would do it again and again because that gives me the muscle to do smaller films. It gives courage to producers who can have confidence in me and say, ‘chalo Shweta ke saath film banate hai!’.”
An update on the Mirzapur film:
Shweta also shared her excitement about the upcoming Mirzapur film, which is currently in the pre-production stage. “So, from what I understand, because Munna played by Divyendu) is a part of it, it has to do something with season one. We can’t be bringing back a character to life after he dies in the last season (season 2). It is based in a time when Munna is still alive and I think Sweety (played by Shriya Pilgaonkar) is also still alive. But we have not got a call yet from Excel (the makers of Mirzapur) blocking our dates. So we all are waiting for it. But one thing I know is that it is going to be power-packed and it’s going to have the swag. It is going to be the beast of the heartland and I cannot wait to read the script because Puneet Krishna, the writer of the first and the second season of Mirzapur, he is one of my favourite writers… I can’t wait to see what happens in the film. It is going to be a challenge because these are characters who don’t need an introduction, so I am very curious and excited to see what will happen with these characters in this world (of Mirzapur).”
Shweta further shared that the script is still being written and the film is expected to release in 2026. She also clarified that the film will not affect the web series, and season four will be a continuation of season three. “From my understanding, season four will be a continuation and extension of season three. The film is going to be just a chapter of season one.”
An update on Yeh Kaali Kaalien Aankhein season 3:
The actress is also gearing up for the third season of Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, which is expected to start shooting next year. “This, we will start shooting next year and maybe it will release next to next year, in 2026.”
Shweta confessed that she is eager to know what’s in store for her characters in both Mirzapur and Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein. “As actors, when a season is over, we start feeling, ‘yeh characters ke saath hua kya? (what is happening with out characters)’ because the audience just saw the season two but for us, when we wrapped the shooting, when Purva and Shikha meet, we were like, ‘arre hota kya hai inka? (what’s happening)’. So I keep wondering what’s happening and how it is going to shape up?,’ as I want to know where my Shikha (Shweta’s character in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein) and Golu (Shweta’s character in Mirzapur) are! In which world they are, what are their issues, what they are going through and how they are navigating through life.”
