For those awaiting the release of Barzakh, the wait is finally over as the makers of the much-anticipated Pakistani web series, featuring Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, has revealed that show is all set to premiere on Zee Zindagi’s YouTube channel and ZEE5 on July 19.

Written and directed by Asim Abbasi, the creative mind behind Zee Zindagi’s hits Churails and Cake (Pakistan’s 2018 Oscar submission), Barzakh promises to be an exciting experience for the viewers, claim the makers. To keep the audience hooked on to the upcoming show, Zee Zindagi recently unveiled six stunning artistic posters.

“When all has withered…will love endure? #Barzakh Premieres 19th July on Zindagi’s YouTube and @ZEE5Shows @ZEE5Global Poster Credit: Mahoor Jamal, Abdullah Haris & Huba Akhlaq,” the channel captioned the poster on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle

Barzakh had its premiere at the prestigious Series Mania Festival in France in 2023. This project not only marks Asim Abbasi’s second collaboration with the channel but also reunites Sanam Saeed and Fawad Khan for the first time since their acclaimed series Zindagi Gulzar Hai ended in 2013.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Hunza Valley, Barzakh narrates the moving journey of a 76-year-old recluse who invites his estranged children and grandchildren to his secluded valley resort for an extraordinary event — his wedding to the ghost of his first true love. This deeply emotional story invites viewers to ponder the mysteries of life, the afterlife, and the binding power of love. The series delves into themes of mental health, postpartum depression, generational trauma, and gender inclusivity, challenging societal norms and exploring the intricate role of folklore in human life.

Alongside Fawad and Sanam, the six-episode series features a talented ensemble cast including Salman Shahid, M Fawad Khan, Eman Suleman, Khushhal Khan, Faiza Gillani, Anika Zulfikar, and Franco Giusti. It has been produced by Shailja Kejriwal and Waqas Hassan, with cinematography by Mo Azmi.

“All storytellers dream of moments like this in their career, where they are allowed to run wild. Barzakh is just that — me running wild through this forest of fear and hope and magic — to create something a little bit spiritual and a whole lot of trippy,” director Asim Abbasi said in a statement.

“It’s a story about love and faith. About humans desperately looking for connections and meaning. Fragile, broken souls, looking to hold on to whatever they can, to make sense of this big, bad, beautiful thing called life. Thanks to Shailja and Zindagi, Barzakh has truly been a once in a lifetime opportunity for me,” he added.

While Abbasi hopes that the six hours of this series thoroughly mesmerises and entertain audiences, he wishes that the ‘Land of Nowhere’ changes a small part of the audiences’ hearts in “an unexpected way”.
