SS Rajamouli had initially planned his historic two-part Baahubali franchise as one film. However, he eventually ended up it dividing into Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), both of which crossed over like no Telugu film had by then. Now, Rajamouli has re-edited both parts and clubbed them into one to release it as Baahubali: The Epic.

Baahubali: The Epic is certainly not a patch on either of the first two films since it’s technically a re-release, but it’s secured a decent opening weekend nonetheless. On Sunday (day 3) at the domestic box office, it earned Rs 6 crore, a slight drop from its Saturday (day 2) earnings of Rs 7.30 crore, which was a further decline from its opening day number of Rs 9.65 crore.

Add to that, Baahubali: The Epic earned Rs 1.15 crore from its paid previews in Telugu. As per Sacnilk, the total opening weekend of the film in India sums up to Rs 24.10 crore. This is led by the native Telugu version (around Rs 18 crore), followed by the dubbed Hindi (around Rs 4 crore), Tamil (around Rs 80 lakh), Malayalam (around Rs 51 lakh), and Kannada (around 7 lakh) versions.

In the process, Baahubali: The Epic has managed to surpass the opening weekend domestic earnings of the Hindi version of Baahubali: The Beginning, which garnered Rs 22.35 crore. However, as the word of mouth kicked in, the momentum increased drastically, with the total lifetime run of the Hindi version concluding at Rs 118.50 crore after eight weeks.

As a re-released film, Baahubali: The Epic has broken a couple of records. Firstly, it’s become the biggest Telugu re-release, surpassing the earnings of the re-release of Trivikram Srinivas’ 2010 action comedy fantasy Khaleja. The Mahesh Babu-starrer, which made around Rs 18.08 crore initially, was re-released earlier this year on the occasion of the birthday of Mahesh’s legendary father Krishna. It went on to add another Rs 11 crore to its total domestic haul. Interestingly, Mahesh is all set to team up with Rajamouli for their next film, which also stars Priyanka Chopra. The first reveal of the long-awaited movie will be made this month.

Baahubali: The Epic is currently the second highest-grossing re-release in South. Given the current trajectory, it’s likely to become the highest this week, beating Dharani’s 2004 Tamil sports drama Ghilli in the process. The Thalapathy Vijay-starrer earned Rs 50 crore during its initial run. Upon its re-release last year, it added another Rs 30 crore to its total collection.

Given how this week fares, Baahubali: The Epic could even become the highest-grossing Indian re-release, beating the collections of the re-release of Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru’s romantic comedy Sanam Teri Kasam. The Harshvardhan Rane-starrer earned Rs 35 crore earlier this year, its re-release earnings even higher than what it made in its original 2016 run (Rs 16 crore).
