Producer Asit Kumar Modi recently opened up about how he felt when actors exited his show Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC). In an interview wth SCREEN, he admitted that it hurts every time an artiste leaves, but stressed that audiences should respect an actor’s decision to step away. Modi also addressed the recent challenges faced by former Sodhi, Gurucharan Singh.
Talking about actors leaving the show, Asit shared that he does miss former TMKOC cast members. The producer said, “We all started together, and when you work with someone for so long and they leave, it hurts. The former Haathi Bhai (Kavi Kumar Azad) fell ill and passed away. I also fondly remember Ghanshyam Naik (Nattu Kaka). Had he been around still, things would have been fun. Some people just left the show like that. After COVID, they didn’t want to do the show. A few others, I don’t know what happened. What was the misunderstanding that they left?”

He added, “Taking everyone along for 17 years and running the show has not been easy. I didn’t give up so easily. Whenever anyone leaves, my heart aches. When we think about them and create a story, we love that character. If we don’t love the character, why would we prolong them in the story? And when a new person replaces them, the audience gets upset too. People have stayed with us for 15 years, 12 years. Some left the show midway, and then came back. We took them, letting bygones be bygones. I always think about the show first. No one is above the show, not even me. Former Goli (Kush Shah) had to leave for further studies, so we gave him a nice farewell. We even got emotional because of the good times we spent. Sometimes we shot at night. During GPL, we shot for 10 nights straight.”
Asit Modi also shared that he is in touch with a few actors who have left Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, including Gurucharan Singh. He said, “I am in touch with some people still. Whatever is happening with Gurucharanji is not nice. I feel bad for him. I have told him that he can always talk to me if there is a problem. What will I do harboring a grudge?”
Asit Modi concluded by saying, “I am happy that the show is a source of happiness all over the world. Artistes have worked hard on making the show successful. Now, after 17 years, if someone wants to leave due to their problems, they are free to leave, and the audience will have to understand this. They love the character, but the artistes also have their reasons. I have pledged to run the show till I have the energy. Anyone who wants to leave, it’s okay. Just do it with love, and maintain the relationship.”
