Actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani reminisced about the time she used to take an auto to get to the sets of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, because she wasn’t making enough money to own a car. Smriti revealed that her makeup man was embarrassed for her, since his “Tulsi bhabhi” had to take an auto while he came to work in a car.
In an interview with Neelesh Misra, Smriti opened up about her salary, and the odd rules producer Shobha Kapoor had imposed on the sets. She said, “First year of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, I was getting Rs 1800 bucks and I had no car. When I got married, me and Zubin had Rs 30,000.” She continued, “Mujhe yaad hain, mera make-up man kehta tha, gaadi toh lelo mujhe sharam aata hai mai gaadi pe aata hu (I remember, my make-up man told me to purchase a vehicle because he was embarrassed).”
Talking about the rules set by Shobha, Smriti said, “There was one rule: ‘chai koi nahi piyega aur khana koi nahi khaega (No food and drinks on set).’” She explained that this restriction was put in place to prevent damage to the sets’ furniture. Smriti added that although actors could have tea, technicians were not permitted to do so and hence she would leave the sets to have tea with some of her technician friends.
Smriti, who played Tulsi Virani in the serial, rose to prominence and became a household name. She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003.
