Entrepreneur Anupam Mittal is currently busy with the promotions of business reality television show Shark Tank India Season 3. In a recent interview, Anupam opened up about his journey in the startup space and revealed how he failed in two-three businesses as a teenager. The entrepreneur also shed light on his struggling days in America, when he applied for a thousand jobs before bagging a position.
When asked what kept him relevant in the startup space despite being two decade old in the industry, Anupam told CNBC-TV18, “I am very afraid of irrelevance. You reinvent yourself when you fear failure. Fear to me is a great driver. Right from the beginning, I failed so much. As a teenager I failed because I come from a business family. 2-3 businesses of mine failed then only and I used to blame this country as I was very arrogant.”
Anupam Mittal thought of starting fresh by going to the USA, however, that too wasn’t an easy ride for him. He said, “Then I went to US and I failed their also. I graduated from the US thinking if I study there, I might get to learn something. I must have applied to a thousand jobs and sat for 200 interviews and I didn’t get a single job. By sheer perseverance I got a job and then I worked there for a few years. I am a guy who has been rejected so many times in every aspect and who had very little chance to be successful. If you ask my family and friends, they always call me the black sheep of the family because this guy has no chance to make it into something meaningful.”
Giving advice to young entrepreneurs, Anupam explained how hard work is the only way to succeed. He said, “But here I am sitting with you and I have forgotten the number of companies I have invested in and have built a few companies. It shows that you don’t need to be smart or lucky, you just need to persevere and stay with it.”
