The fourth season of Shark Tank India kicked off this week with a trio of dramatic pitches. Episode two of the new season featured Mayur, an entrepreneur from Gujarat, who pitched his lehenga brand BL Fabrics to the panel of ‘sharks’. Joining returning ‘sharks’ Ritesh Aggarwal, Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta and Vineeta Singh this season is Kunal Behl. Peyush Bansal and Anupam Mittal were absent in the episode. Aman was his usual self during the pitch, cracking jokes at both Vineeta and Kunal. Mayur asked for Rs 1 crore in funding in exchange of 2% equity, valuing his brand at Rs 50 lakh.
The ‘sharks’ were all impressed by Mayur’s brand, but they were especially taken by his social media acumen. Mayur said that his brand has a combined total of 3 million followers on YouTube and Instagram. While giving a presentation of his social media platforms, Mayur said that his most viral Reel has accumulated 47 million views. Namita was stunned. “Is he serious?” she remarked, asking Ritesh to physically verify this claim. Ritesh got up from his chair and walked over to the display screen, and was surprised to learn that Mayur’s claims were, in fact, true.
The ‘sharks’ asked Mayur who handles his social media, and were further surprised to learn that he does it all alone. Aman looked at Vineeta and said, “Fire your team immediately.” Namita said, “I have an entire team that handles my content, there is a second team that makes videos, and there is a third team that figures out strategies. We have agencies! And here you are, doing everything yourself! And you’ve been doubling your revenue because of it. You went from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore to Rs 17 crore. Superb.”
But Mayur’s one-man-army approach to running his business also backfired at him. Vineeta said that she finds his operation ‘not investable’ at the moment, even though he is projecting revenue of Rs 17 crore this year. Namita was also unsure of investing in him, because he doesn’t have a number two to run operations in his place. But Ritesh and Kunal showed interest, and offered Mayur a deal for Rs 1 crore, but in exchange of 5% equity. Aman excused himself from the negotiations, and took on the role of mediator.
Mayur was conflicted between the two identical offers, and countered by asking for Rs 1 crore in exchange of 3% equity. He also asked Ritesh and Kunal if they’d want to partner up on the deal. Kunal shook his head, and Aman interjected, “Talk it out among yourselves. Kunal naya hai ghabra jaata hai (Kunal is new, he gets hassled).” Kunal didn’t seem to pleased, and he said with an uncomfortable laugh, “Kya bola (What did you say)?” But he came to an agreement with Ritesh, offering Mayur Rs 1 crore in exchange of 5% equity, which would be lowered to 4% on the condition that he hits Rs 15 crore in revenue. And with that, Mayur walked away with a deal.
