Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty graced the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show. The actors shared several amusing anecdotes about each other and reflected on their long-standing friendship, with Suniel even revealing that he drew inspiration from Sanjay during his career. While joking about the rivalry between Archana Puran Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu, host Kapil Sharma asked Sanjay and Suniel why multi-starrer films are no longer being made. Both actors agreed that this is largely due to the insecurity among today’s stars.
Sanjay said, “I think there is too much insecurity today. During my prime, I have worked with Dilip Sahab, Sanjeev Kumar, and Shammi uncle, and there was no insecurity; in fact, I learnt a lot from them. Even if Anna said my lines and I said his lines, there was no issue, because we thought the film should be good.” Suniel agreed, adding, “There was an appreciation for each other.”
Suniel Shetty also reflected on his early struggles, admitting he lacked formal acting training and learned by observing stars like Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Govinda, and Sunny Deol, contrasting their era with today’s insecure environment in the industry. He said, “After Balwan had worked, I was called a wooden actor. They said my performance was pathetic and that I should return to Udipi and work in my restaurant. I had felt bad, but then I realized I had no formal training in acting. I just learnt a few action sequences and went on to do the film. Every young kid thinks he will be the next Amitabh Bachchan, and you go forward, but it’s not a rosy picture. Even after its success, I had stress that I didn’t know how to act. I would look up to Sanjay, Jackie Shroff, Govinda, and Sunny Deol. I had my heroes whom I took inspiration from because there was no insecurity. I learned acting from them. Today’s kids don’t have that mindset. The virtual world has left them very scared.”
Sanjay added, “What enmity do we have internally that we wish the other’s films don’t work. All films should work. The more humble you are, the further you’ll go. With just one hit, new actors go crazy, but I challenge them to survive in this industry for 40 years.”
The Great Indian Kapil Show, featuring Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty, is now streaming on Netflix.
