Raghu Ram, best known as one of the creators of MTV Roadies, opened up about his personal life in a new episode. He said that he was a ‘bad husband’ to his first wife, actor Sugandha Garg, and that they were still married when he first encountered his now-wife Natalie Di Luccio. He discovered a video of Natalie singing a song from his ex-wife’s film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, and shared it with his friends. Appearing on the Couple of Things talk show with her, he said that they met in person for the first time four years before his divorce.
They remained friends through the years, and became romantically involved after he split up from Sugandha, and after she broke up with the person she was seeing. “Sugandha is a very nice person, she’s a great friend to the both of us,” he said, gesturing at Natalie. “I was not a good husband. I don’t mind admitting that. I know that. I was working all the time; we were taught growing up that we should work, and that wives would handle everything else. But that’s not how things should be,” he said, adding, “Sugandha’s film, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, was about to be released, and we were both very excited. By chance, I saw a video of a white girl singing a song from the film, in Hindi. It was Natalie.” Natalie chimed in, “I was in Canada at that time, I was just a girl on the internet.
Raghu said that years passed, and somebody told him that Natalie had moved to Mumbai to pursue a career, and that they should meet since he was so taken by her. They met formally, and Natalie even took a picture with him. She had no idea who he was, and what he was perceived as publicly. But Raghu warned her that she was inviting trouble by taking a picture with him. They kept meeting at parties over the years, while Raghu was still married to Sugandha.
He said, “She was dating someone; I was married. No tension. She was like any other friend. When I separated in 2015, my friends tried very hard to get me to meet another woman. But the fact is that I’m very shy, and I’ve never approached a girl, even if I like her.” Natalie said that when she broke up, she read in the newspaper that Raghu had separated as well. She contemplated sending him a message, but didn’t. A month or two later, Raghu reached out to her to invite her to a party, but she told him that she was going through something similar and that they should meet personally. He went over to her house, and that’s when they became involved.
Raghu thanked Natalie for rescuing him from the dark phase that he was in after his divorce. “Men aren’t told how to deal with failure. I failed in my first marriage. This might sound dramatic to you, but if I hadn’t met Natalie at that time, I wouldn’t be here. I wanted to destroy myself. I’m not alone. There are lots of people who go through break-ups and divorces… I was punishing myself every night. It has nothing to do with my ex-wife; we did the right thing. But I didn’t know how to deal with it.”
Raghu’s divorce was finalised in 2018, which is when he married Natalie. They welcomed their first child, a son, in 2020.
