Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have dominated the Tamil film industry for decades. Although many have risen to fame after them, Kamal and Rajini still hold a special place in people’s hearts. As mentees of legendary Tamil filmmaker K Balachander, they frequently shared the screen in their early days. However, post their ascent to massive stardom, they have not appeared in a film together, though the two maintain a close bond and often attend events to support each other’s work.
Recently, Kamal opened up about his equation with Rajinikanth and addressed whether they might work together again or make cameo appearances in each other’s films sometime in the future. “It’s not a new combination. We have done many films together. Then we decided not to work together. We are not like two competitors. We had the same mentor. Unlike any other place, the competition is there, openly. But there’s no envy and it’s two different paths,” he said. “We also never make snide remarks about each other. We made this call when we were in our 20s; it’s not that we became older and wiser now,” Kamal added.
Commenting on the conversation surrounding exorbitant star fees and entourage costs, the actor-filmmaker noted, “Don’t pay these actors so much… If you don’t want them, find new actors. If you want a superstar, pay him. If you don’t want or can’t afford him, don’t. It’s as simple as that.”
Kamal Haasan is currently gearing up for the release of the vigilante action film Indian 2, directed by S Shankar. A sequel to Indian (1996), Kamal reprises his role as Senapathy, a freedom fighter turned vigilante who fights against corruption. The 1996 film earned Kamal his third National Film Award for Best Actor.
