Lokesh Kanagaraj never disappoints his fans. Another proof is the teaser of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Thalaivar 171, which has now gotten an intriguing title, Coolie. Like all Lokesh’s films with stars, the teaser is a callback to many of Rajinikanth’s movies. The actor played a coolie in Uzhaipaali (1993), Mannan (1992), Mullum Malarum (1978), and many other films.
On top of the title, the teaser also features another easter egg. Throughout the promo, Rajinikanth is heard singing a song, titled Siva Sambo, from his film with Kamal Haasan, Ninaithale Inikkum (1979). The song features lyrics that celebrates a hedonistic lifestyle, which was embraced by Rajinikanth’s character in the movie.
Lokesh Kanagaraj had earlier claimed that Rajinikanth’s Coolie has nothing to do with his cinematic universe, which has films like Vikram, Kaithi, and Leo. Hence, Coolie will be the third standalone movie in his filmography after Maanagaram and Master.
Earlier, the wristwatches in the promotional material of Coolie led to speculations that the film has something to do with Suriya’s Rolex character from Vikram. However, it is unlikely given Lokesh’s statement about the movie.
Anirudh Ravichander is back with his A-game for Coolie as well. The teaser features a kickass background score that will set the stage for things to come.
Other than the title, the rest of the cast and crew for the film is yet to be revealed. Sun Pictures, which struck gold with Jailer, has once again teamed up with Rajinikanth for Coolie, which will be released in 2025.
