Suriya and Sudha Kongara released a joint statement announcing the delay of Tamil film Puranaanooru.

Suriya will star in Sudha Kongara's PurananooruSuriya will play the lead role in Sudha Kongara's Purananooru.

Director Sudha Kongara and Suriya collaborated for a much-appreciated gritty drama Soorarai Pottru, which skipped the theatrical route due to the pandemic. However, the two promised to team up again for a film titled Puranaanooru, which was announced in 2023. While it was expected that Suriya and Sudha would start the project after the shoot of Kanguva, the duo has announced that it is going to take a while.

In an official statement, Suriya and Sudha shared that the film is getting delayed as the two want to do justice to the story, which is going to take up a lot of time. “Puranaanooru requires more time. This collaboration is very special and close to our hearts. We are working towards delivering our best. We will be going on floors very soon,” the statement read.

A promo was unveiled in October 2023 revealing that Puranaanooru will also star Dulquer Salmaan, Nazriya Nazim, and Vijay Varma in the lead roles. The film marks composer GV Prakash Kumar’s 100th movie.

The film is jointly produced by 2D Entertainment and Meenakshi Cinemas. As far as the title goes, Puranaanuru is the name of one of the five epics in Tamil literature.

It is unknown if Suriya will take up another project in the meantime or will be working on the pre-production of Puranaanuru. Meanwhile, his fantasy film Kanguva, directed by Siva, is gearing up for release. The teaser of the film is slated to be released on Tuesday evening.
