Keerthy Suresh is currently riding high on the excitement of her Bollywood debut with director Kalees’ Baby John, a remake of Atlee’s Tamil blockbuster Theri (2016), which originally featured “Thalapathy” Vijay in the lead role. Interestingly, in Baby John, Keerthy stepped into a role previously portrayed by her close friend and fellow actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu, adding an extra layer of joy to her experience. Meanwhile, Keerthy recently revealed that it was Samantha herself who suggested her name during discussions about Baby John.
“She probably had me in mind when this was happening; that’s what Varun (Dhawan) also told me. I can’t be grateful enough for that. It’s so sweet of her to say, ‘Keerthy will be able to pull off this character.’ Her performance in Theri is one of my favourites in Tamil. Honestly, I was very scared,” Keerthy shared during a chat with Galatta India.
Keerthy Suresh further spoke about the support Samantha Ruth Prabhu extended to her for the project. “I remember her posting a story on Instagram after watching the trailer of Baby John, saying, ‘I wouldn’t have shared this one with anyone else, but you.’ It was so sweet and meant a lot to me. I couldn’t have asked for a better debut. This is one of the characters I really love and I am so glad I got to play it in Hindi,” she added.
Keerthy and Samantha had previously worked together in director Nag Ashwin’s biographical drama Mahanati, based on the life of legendary actor-filmmaker Savitri. While Keerthy portrayed Savitri, Samantha played Madhuravani, a journalist. Also featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda, Rajendra Prasad and Bhanupriya in key roles, Keerthy’s performance in Mahanati earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
