Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s life has been an open book for the most part. Having been a child actor, who later became one of the most popular actors of Indian cinema, Kamal’s life has been in the public eye from a very young age. The actor has been married twice and has two daughters. He was first married to Vani Ganapathy, and later married Sarika.
In a recent media interaction about his upcoming release, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan was joined by his co-stars Trisha and Silambarasan TR. When a journalist asked Trisha about getting married, the actor said she wasn’t really burdened by the tag of being unmarried. “It’s okay if it happens, and okay if it doesn’t too,” said Trisha.
Giving his insights into the institution of marriage, Kamal Haasan recollected an old interview, which was conducted by MP John Brittas in his earlier avatar as a journalist. “My very good friend, MP Brittas, once asked me why I got married twice despite coming from a good Brahmin family, and I asked him what does a family’s reputation have to do with marriage,” he recalled and said that Brittas further prodded him by saying that as devotees of Lord Rama, it doesn’t sit right for him to have more than one marriage.
In response, the actor, a self-confessed atheist, shared that he, in good faith, immediately retorted, “Firstly, I don’t pray to any god. I don’t follow Rama’s path. Probably I follow his father’s (Dasharatha) path (who had three wives).” According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama was the son of King Dasharatha’s first wife Kaushalya. His other wives were Sumithra and Kaikeyi, whose children were Lakshmana, Shatrughna, and Bharatha.
Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life releases on June 5.
