Amid the simmering controversy over the recently released thriller film Farhana (Director Nelson Venkatesan), actor Aishwarya Rajesh, who plays the lead role in the movie, has reportedly been provided police security.
The controversy started when a couple of Muslim organisations, including the Indian National League (INL), termed the film, which hit the theatres on May 12, “anti-Islamic”, reported India Today. They alleged that the film portrayed the Muslim community in a particular way.
According to Times Now, Aishwarya was given protection fearing a controversy similar to that of Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story, starring Adah Sharma.
Following the eruption of the row, which started after the makers’ released the trailer of the movie, Dream Warrior Pictures, which produced the film, had issued a media statement clarifying the allegations. “Our Dream Warrior Pictures has produced and released blockbusters such as Kaithi, Aruvi, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Joker. In that line, Farhana is now slated to release in theatres on May 12. Our company, which has been producing and releasing excellent films that entertain people and make them think, has always been working with great social responsibilities. For us, who are producing and releasing films that give importance to the sentiments of religious harmony, social unity and love, the controversies created by a few people about Farhana, which has been duly censored by the government, is painful.”
“Farhana is not against any religion or sentiments. Our aim is only to provide good movies and never act against any religious sentiments, or beliefs. And we never allow or want any act against humanity in our stories. We think that our brothers and sisters who are creating controversies about our movie should understand this. Our Tamil Nadu is a paradise for religious harmony and a land that cherishes works of art. It is not proper to oppose a censored film before its release due to misunderstandings and create controversies. It will make those who oppose it look like they have no proper understanding. A film is made with the hardwork of several hundred people. Tamil fans will support a film that is not flawed.”
“In certain foreign countries, if a film contains scenes that hurt religious sentiments, it is very difficult for the film to get past censorship. Especially in Malaysia, Singapore, Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, the audit rules are strict. But in the countries mentioned above, Farhana has been censored and is ready for release without any issues. This makes it clear that Farhana is not a controversial film. So friends, accept this explanation well and with camaraderie,” Dream Warrior Pictures added.
The movie depicts the journey of the protagonist, Farhana, who becomes employed by a company offering phone sex chat services. Initially uneasy about her job, she gradually develops a connection with a caller who seeks companionship and conversation, India Today reported.
Farhana, which has been receiving generally positive reviews, features Selvaraghavan, Jithan Ramesh, Anumol, and Aishwarya Dutta among others.
