96C Premkumar opens up about the script for his sequel to 96 and why he thinks its his best writing as of now

C Premkumar is ready to follow up the widespread critical acclaim for his intimate conversational piece Meiyazhagan, which released a year ago, with a sequel to his debut romantic drama ’96’, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in the lead. He spoke about his completed script for the long-awaited 96 sequel, why he considers it his best writing to date, why he would not do it without the original cast returning, and his feelings about the cult status of his films, among other things.

About writing the sequel, Premkumar told Galatta Plus, “I finished writing the sequel to 96 last December only. The happiest part is that’s my best writing so far, I feel. Because even I was scared to write a sequel to such a film. Many people told me not to do that. Since many sequels haven’t worked well, but all the sequels I know have done well. Since I cracked the whole story, I wanted to write it. It was very interesting and challenging to write. ” The director also shared the feedback he got from his friends who read the finished script. “It was like a training for me to write a story, after 10 years of its original completion. I had to write every day. The unanimous feedback I got from my team and friends after reading it is that it is far better than 96, the first film,” said Premkumar.

Premkumar is also resolute in his commitment to bring back the original star cast of 96. “I want the same star cast from 96 for this film too. Since the sequel is taking place 10 years after the original film, they should all appear in appropriate getups. So that is very demanding to coordinate. It involves a high budget, too. I am thankful to every actor who performed in 96. I can write whatever I have in mind, but to convert that into a movie. All that connected well for the audience. It is my stubborn duty to make the sequel only with all of them back.” The shooting of 96 sequel is expected to start next year. Premkumar is all set to unite with Fahad Faasil for a thriller film next.
