Amaran box office collection day 1: If the concept of “hard work pays off” ever needed a poster boy, Tamil actor Sivakarthikeyan would be a strong candidate. After years of dedicated efforts, he has achieved the biggest opening of his career with Amaran, helmed by Rajkumar Periasamy, with the film recording a day-one collection exceeding that of Dhanush’s Raayan. It now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Tamil opener of 2024. Despite stiff competition from high-profile releases such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again — both hit the screens on Friday — Sivakarthikeyan’s biographical action war film Amaran, in which he stars alongside Sai Pallavi, has posted one of the strongest opening-day collections for a Tamil film this year.
On its release day, Amaran garnered an India nett collection of Rs 21.65 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The Tamil version contributed Rs 17 crore, while the Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam versions brought in Rs 40 lakh, Rs 15 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively. It’s worth noting that Dhanush’s Raayan had registered a domestic nett of Rs 13.65 crore on its opening day in July, eventually grossing Rs 154 crore worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. With largely positive reviews flowing in from all directions, Amaran is well-positioned to rank among the top five highest-grossing Tamil films of the year. Notably, its opening-day figure comes close to the day-one domestic nett of director S Shankar’s Indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan, which earned Rs 25.6 crore and currently holds third place on the list.
On Thursday, Amaran achieved an impressive 77.94 per cent overall occupancy in Tamil Nadu theatres. The morning shows opened with a 63.63 per cent occupancy, climbing to 81.74 per cent in the afternoon, 82.36 per cent in the evening and peaking at 84.01 per cent in the evening. The film revolves around the life and legacy of Major Mukund Varadarajan, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra — India’s highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. Mukund lost his life during a 2014 encounter with militants in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir.
Adapted from the book series India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, the film is co-produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures Films India. Along with Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, the cast includes Bhuvan Arora, Rahul Bose, Lallu, and Shreekumar in significant roles. In his review of the movie, SCREEN’s Avinash Ramachandran wrote, “With wonderful performances by Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, Amaran is a poignant yet powerful tale about Major Mukund Varadarajan’s love for India, and his wife Indhu.”
