Love song
The Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad saw a flurry of activities during the filming of Locha – e – ulfat from 2 States, a song that shows Arjun Kapoor falling head over heels in love with Alia Bhatt. Shot over a period of four days inside the campus, the peppy track saw 100 dancers dressed up as college students enjoying a casual conversation or just exchanging notes as part of the background during the song. “This is the first song in the film and we wanted it to be as casual and youthful as possible. Arjun wants to profess his love and dance, but he is a little hesitant. So, we conceptualised an idea where Alia can’t see Arjun dancing and some students randomly join him for the signature steps and a move or two,” stated D’Souza.
Colourful sojourn
Since the dominant background colour palette of the song was brown and grey (because of the campus walls and surroundings), art director Amrita Mahal spruced up a huge wall by using almost 500 colourful pieces of papers together. “Throughout the video, you will only see colourful clothes, but the background is pretty normal. The moment this wall enters the scene, bam! It’s like a riot of colours out there,” mentioned Kapoor, who confessed that it took some time for him to ace the signature moves set by D’Souza.
Tough task-master
There were several other challenges that D’Souza took up for this song, which included shooting a portion inside the library in one single take and filming one part near the spiral staircase a frame which required the camera and pulley to be hanged using a rope. “We asked Arjun to do the signature move on the ground floor, while several dancers filled the staircase area. The camera was hung from the fourth or fifth floor and crew members kept pulling it up and down. We had absolutely no clue about the shots that we were getting. Everything was guess work. As soon as the hook line, Locha… was played, the dancers were asked to throw pieces of red paper, which gave the shot a touch of some random celebration,” quipped D’ Souza.
Feeling ‘lonely’
While everyone had a blast, Bhatt felt a little disappointed since she had very little to do in the song. “The song is so catchy. I desperately wanted to be a part of it, especially because the hook step is simply adorable. But all I had to do was walk around and pretend as if I can’t see Arjun dancing,” mentioned Bhatt. While Kapoor danced away, Bhatt would often dance behind the director’s chair or in some hidden room, before making an appearance for her part. 2 States is directed by Abhishek Varman and releases on April 18. It is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Karan Johar.
Singham 2 on the floors
The shooting of Rohit Shetty’s Singham 2 that took off on March 9 is presently going on in Mumbai. A chase sequence was filmed at the Cotton Green railway station last week and one could spot lead star Ajay Devgn dressed in a cop’s uniform, looking similar to what he did in the prequel Singham. There were several bikes and police jeeps and the unit members trying to capture shots of running trains.
Shaatir in Cape Town
The unit of Shaatir flew to Cape Town last week for a 12 day schedule of the film. Kay Kay Menon who plays the villain in the film is based in the country and a part of the film is set there. After this outdoor only a weeks shooting will be left before the film wraps up. This part will be shot in June when lead actor Emraan Hashmi gets back from Toronto where his son is undergoing treatment. Directed by Kunal Deshmukh, the film has Pakistani actress Humaima Malick playing the female protagonist. Shaatir is produced by UTV Motion Pictures.
