The news of AR Rahman’s divorce from his wife Saira Banu has cast a melancholic shadow on his past words on love, marriage, and family. In a haunting twist, his earlier reflections now serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of love relationships.

In an interview with O2 India, Rahman once shared his hopes and fears about marriage, revealing, “Marriage changes you. Yeah, I think it was exciting and terrifying both, to know that you’re going to live with another person whom you didn’t know before. And I think my marriage, my intention was more spiritual than physical.”

Twenty-nine years ago, Rahman entrusted his mother to find him a bride. His conversation with Simi Garewal offered a glimpse into his thoughts on finding a life partner. He shared, “To be honest, I didn’t have time to go and search for a bride. But, I knew it was the right time for me to get married. I was 29 and I told my mother. I said, ‘find me a bride.'” Additionally, Rahman specified a humble requirement, seeking someone with “loads of humility. Someone who will not give me much trouble, inspire me.”

Saira Banu became that partner, and together they built a life filled with love, music, and three beautiful children – Khatija (29), Raheema, and AR Ameen (21).

However, amidst the joy, Rahman acknowledged the complexities of balancing loyalty between his mother, wife, and children. “We did have children, and then your whole loyalty towards family is split in a way because it’s you, your wife, and then it’s your mother. And then how do you integrate all this stuff and go beyond a level where you see everybody as a family?”

He also spoke about the transformative power of marriage, saying, “Because every house has problems and every house has love. Marriage expanded my whole sensibilities of compassion and understanding, patience, many things which are then transformed into a larger perspective.”

Now, as Rahman navigates the uncharted territory of divorce, his words resonate with a deeper sense of vulnerability. His recent statement, a heartfelt goodbye to their almost three-decade-long journey, serves as a poignant reminder that even the most beautiful symphonies can fade. It reads:

“We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
