In the past year or so, Ed Sheeran has been downright obsessed with India. From collaborations with the biggest stars, such as Arijit Singh and Shah Rukh Khan, to performing atop Old Delhi roofs, the singer hasn’t shied away from expressing his love for the country. In a recent interview, Sheeran talked a bit more about his connection with India and how his whole perspective of the country and its people changed because of just a music video.
In a conversation with Zane Lowe, Sheeran talked about going to different countries and experiencing their culture. Talking about India in particular, he said, “What was interesting about doing the whole India tour was that the only reason we were there was to shoot the music video. We thought that we needed to go all over the country and shoot a little bit everywhere. I love that every hundred miles, the culture, language, food, fashion, rhythms, and all of it changed. Everywhere we went something was more interesting. There are also talents there that have existed for decades that you would not know about.”
He added, “It’s a wealth of discovery of movies, and someone going like, ‘Oh, have you seen this movie?’ Have you seen Om Shanti Om? It’s like a really big Shah Rukh Khan movie, and it has amazing songs and dances in it. This is a weird analogy, but it is almost like introducing Star Wars to someone for the first time, and they just go like, ‘What the f*** is this?’ There are superstars in the same country singing in different languages.”
Talking about his collaboration with Arijit Singh, Ed Sheeran credited Indian people for the kind of love they give him and made another important correlation between his life and India. He said, “We were both stoked to meet each other. I went to his show first, and we sang ‘Perfect’ together. We were going to sing a duet for a Bollywood movie, and I heard a lot of music before meeting him. When I was in India, I realised that Arijit is very much like their version of me, in terms of the kind of songs we make. ‘Sapphire’ is the most important song for me in the record. When I pass away, that’s the song they are going to be playing on the news because the kind of feeling I get when I meet people of the Indian diaspora and the overall idea behind this song feels super important.”
When Zane Lowe stated that he loved the track “Symmetry” from the new album, Sheeran revealed that Punjabi singer Karan Aujla has prepared a version of that song, but he is still to give it a listen. Aujla recently broke the internet with his performance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Ed Sheeran’s new album Play is available for pre-save on streaming platforms and is releasing on September 12.
