Unlike the recent Golden Globes ceremony, which witnessed some very awkward moments as host Jo Koy’s many “jokes” fell flat and did not evoke much laughter from the room, the Grammys 2024 were cheerful, thanks to South African comedian and writer Trevor Noah, who hosted the event for the fourth consecutive time.
Whenever Noah took the stage at the event held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, attendees were in stitches. Even Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who was not impressed by a “joke” Koy made during the Golden Globes, was seen laughing as Noah made a comment about the media attention on her relationship with American football player Travis Kelce.
In fact, Noah commenced his “Swift jokes” as soon as the Grammy-winning artist entered the room. “Taylor Swift, everybody,” Noah announced as she entered the hall with her friend, singer-musician Jack Antonoff and others. “Are you seeing what’s happening right now? As Taylor Swift moves through the room, the local economy around those tables improves,” he quipped.
Later in the day, Noah also addressed the “Swelce” (a portmanteau for Swift and Kelce) romance, mentioning that it’s unfair that National Football League (NFL) fans have been complaining about the cameras cutting to Swift during the games. Noah urged all to let her live by pointing out that she’s not controlling the cameras.
In a humorous gesture, Noah stated that he was going to give Swift a break. He added, “I’m going to get revenge on her behalf. Every time they mention Taylor Swift, I am going to cut the cameras to someone who has played football.”
“Cut! Bam,” he said as the camera cut to Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews’ face, taking the actor by surprise and earning a laugh from him and a cheer from the gathering. “You like that, Terry Crews? You better fix your face, Terry. Yeah, we’re watching you all night, Terry; no relaxing for you! Do you work for the CIA, Terry? I can read lips, Terry; you better watch what you say,” he added, receiving a huge round of laughter from the room.
During the recently held Golden Globe Awards ceremony, comedian and host Jo Koy also commented on the “Swelce”. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” he said, adding, “I swear, there’s just more to go to.” However, Swift was not impressed by the joke and kept a straight face when the camera cut to her for a reaction, while taking a sip of her drink.
Overall, Noah’s hosting and his witty remarks about Taylor Swift were well-received, earning him appreciation from both attendees and social media alike. “I’m sorry, I’ll always be laughing at Trevor Noah’s Taylor Swift economy jokes😭,” one user noted on X (formerly Twitter). Another netizen stated that Noah was “the first man at an awards show to make a joke about Taylor Swift the proper way.”
“I would like to thank Trevor Noah for hyping the women up and skipping the misogynistic Taylor Swift jokes. I shouldn’t have to thank him, but I think we all know why,” one Twitter user wrote.
