Punjabi singer and actor, Diljit Dosanjh recently swept away the audience at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California, with his performance. He is the first Indian to have performed on the Coachella stage. Unlike his usual live shows where Diljit prefers to go with the flow, he had prepared for his show at Coachella. But things didn’t go as planned.
In a latest interview, Diljit revealed how he forgot everything he had prepared five minutes before going on the Coachella stage. He told ETimes, “I did what I always do in my shows, go with the flow. Yes, of course, this was a bigger platform not in magnitude but scope, so I had to prepare beforehand. But, five minute before starting, it all got washed out.” But the singer-actor believes that his spontaneity on the stage worked better “because I was my natural self.” Earlier, Diljit had posted snippets from his preparation for the show on social media.
While performing on the international platform, Diljit asked his audience to just “follow the vibe” if they are not understanding the language. But this too he said in Punjabi despite preparing the sentence in English before the show. He revealed that in that moment, “angrezi ayi hi nai meri bahar (I couldn’t just speak English).”
Diljit shared, “I didn’t pay attention to who was listening to me and who wasn’t. But I knew that many people weren’t following my language, which is why I ensured that I say this on stage, though what I said was also in Punjabi. Honestly, I had prepared saying that in English but impromptu Punjabi came out of me, as it usually does.”
The singer shared a clip of his performance on social media. American DJ Diplo also took to Instagram to share a clip of himself grooving to Diljit’s live act. Coachella’s official Twitter handle also shared a glimpse of Diljit’s performance with their fans. The US Embassy India also shared the video of Diljit’s performance and wrote on Twitter, “The @coachella crowd moves to the beat of @diljitdosanjh! Excited to see the first Punjabi singer at one of the biggest music and arts festivals in the U.S!”
