“Punjabi aa gaye oye!” This isn’t just a phrase anymore. It has become a global anthem thanks to Diljit Dosanjh taking the Punjabi music industry by storm and putting it on a global map. The Amar Singh Chamkila actor recently had a sold-out show at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, for his on-going Dil-Luminati Tour, which was highlighted by a surprise visit from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This event underscores the significance of Toronto for Diljit. He has often spoken about how the city holds a special place in his heart, largely due to its vibrant and welcoming Punjabi community.
In a recent interview with Omni Television, moments before his performance to a packed auditorium, Diljit said, “Toronto is special. When I flew out to Indian for the first time, I came to Toronto. The audience here is very special.” The 40-year-old, before starting the interview, apologised for his “broken English” however, impressed fans with his accent. He further added that he wants to give the message of love and peace first through his music. Toronto has consistently shown immense support for his music and films, making it a key location in his career.
Diljit is passionate about promoting Punjabi music globally. He believes that the rich cultural heritage and the unique sound of Punjabi music have universal appeal. By performing at major venues and collaborating with international artists, he aims to bring Punjabi music to a broader audience. His efforts are not just about entertainment but also about cultural representation and pride.
“I have been waiting for this moment since long. There is Latin music, Afro music and now it is time for Punjabi music. Every artist is working hard but in my opinion, it is time for Punjabi music to rise. I want Punjabis to be there on every top global stage. I am not that great and artiste. God has been kind to me but I will strive to bring Punjabi and Punjabi music on every important stage internationally. Chahe meri English tooti footi hai but main meri mehr puri karunga (My English may be poor but I am determined to fulfill this wish).
Speaking about sold-out tickets and performing to packed auditoriums, a humble Diljit added, “Sold out concert is in God’s hand and not in my hand. I am just doing my work and it is all in God’s hands. With God’s grace everything is going on well.” Before he signed off, she taught the reporter his slogan, “Punjabi aa gaye oye!”
The Canadian Prime Minister made a surprise visit to Diljit Dosanjh’s show in Toronto, sharing a picture on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish @diljitdosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a super power,” he added.
Last month, Diljit appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and performed “GOAT,” “Born to Shine” and “Main Hoon Punjab.
