Thudarum box office collection India and worldwide: Tharun Moorthy’s revenge thriller Thudarum, starring Mohanlal and Shobana, is all set to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India. With that, it’ll become the second film of Mohanlal to achieve that feat this year. Earlier, his epic L2: Empuraan also made it to the Rs 100 crore club, earning Rs 105 crore at the domestic box office.
On its third Sunday, Thudarum earned Rs 5 crore, a slight rise from its Saturday collection of Rs 4 crore, which in turn was a step up from its Friday earnings of Rs 3 crore. Throughout its second week, Thudarum has been hovering between the Rs 3 crore and Rs 5 crore marks. While it scored a little above the Rs 5 crore mark on its opening day, it’s shown consistent progress, clocking in between Rs 6 crore and Rs 11 crore throughout its opening week.
As per Sacnilk, the total domestic box office collection of Thudarum now stands at Rs 98.75 crore. Even if it sees a drop in earnings on its third Monday today, the film is likely to cross Rs 100 crore. The lion’s share of this collection belongs to the native Malayalam version, followed by the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions respectively.
Mohanlal’s Thudarum has become the third Malayalam film ever to earn Rs 200 crore at the worldwide box office. The actor confirmed the news and tweeted, “Rs 200 crores Thanks…Some journeys don’t need noise, just hearts to carry them forward. Thudarum has found its place in millions of hearts across the world, breaking all the box office records in Kerala. Gratitude for all the love.” Earlier Manjummel Boys and Empuraan L2, also starring Mohanlal, breached this point.
On Sunday, Thudarum continued to score the maximum theatre occupancy in the evening shows (79.11%), followed by the afternoon shows (73.83%), night shows (66.82%), and morning shows (44.05%). With its new achievement, Thudarum may now soon cross the domestic box office collection of Empuraan, which earned Rs 105 crore across all languages in India. It’s already become the highest grossing film in Kerala.
The combined might of Empuraan and Thudarum has helped Mohanlal to bounce back from his recent lull at the box office, ever since Prithviraj Sukumaran’s 2019 directorial debut Lucifer. This has reminded Mohanlal fans of the box office prowess he commanded with the Drishyam franchise, given Thudarum has quite a few beats in common with the blockbuster family thriller.
Mohanlal is in the role of a taxi-driver named Shanmugham in the film, who is shown to be over protective about his vehicle. Once his black Ambassador goes missing, he goes on a path to uncover his dark past. The film is directed by Tharun Moorthy, of critically-acclaimed movies such as Saudi Vellakka (2022) and Operation Java (2021). Moorthy has written the film with KR Sunil.
Thudarum marks the on-screen reunion of Mohanal and actor Shobana after Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded (2009). The Indian Express review of the film hailed Thudarum as a “nearly flawless revenge thriller.” “Thudarum ranks among one of the finest Indian revenge thrillers that hasn’t compromised on any of its aspects, both on the creative and technical sides, while also ensuring brilliant performances – particularly from Mohanlal and Shobana, together and individually – thus offering an unparalleled experience,” it stated.
