Even as the Justice Hema Committee Report continues to create a stir across many cinema industries, especially Malayalam, there are many incidents that are sidetracking the focus from the principal issue. Primary among such incidents has been the recent interview of Tamil singer Suchitra, which has become a major point of contention. In an interview with a Tamil YouTube channel, she mentioned her opinions on the Hema Committee Report and made statements that underserved the focus of the important document. Apart from calling it a “sabotage” orchestrated by Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, and Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal to disrupt the careers of the young actors like Fahadh Faasil, Suchitra also claimed that raids were conducted in WCC member Rima Kallingal’s house, and it used to be a haven of sorts for “using drugs in parties.”
Responding to these statements, Rima wrote a strongly worded statement of her own, and shared it on her social media handles. It read, “For years, many of you have stood with the WCC and its cause. It is this support and trust that prompts me to write to you now. Over the past two days, several news outlets have reported on statements made by Tamil singer Suchitra in an interview with a YouTube chanel. in the 30-minute interview, she not only names and shames the survivor of the 2017 sexual assault, claiming the survivor “knew it was coming” but also alleges that CM Pinarayi, Mohanlal and Mammootty conspired through the Hema Committee to sabotage the careers of actors like Fahad. We all know why the Hema Committee was formed, and anyone suggesting otherwise should be questioned.”
Rima also put forth a pertinent point as to how sections of the mainstream media, which didn’t pay heed to these “wild theories” focussed on her story about her arrest and gave it traction. “Although these wild theories did not make it into the mainstream news, her baseless statement about me – based on a news article she read about my so-called “arrest” – gained traction. Let me make it clear that such an event never occurred,” said the actor, who revealed her future plan of action to clear her name. “I have decided to take action. I have filed a complaint with the SIT and sent a defamation notice. To all who believe in our cause, let’s continue to march ahead together. Thank you for your support.”

Since the Suchitra interview was made public, the focus has been shifting from the plight of survivors in Malayalam cinema. Based on her statements, many sections of social media decided to pile up accusations against the WCC and undermine their efforts in bringing out the Hema Committee Effort. This statement by Rima will surely clear the air for now, and put the focus back on the stories of the women that is coming out after the report finally saw the light of day.
