Devi Chandana is a name very familiar and beloved to Malayalam mini-screen audiences. An actor and dancer who has often impressed viewers with her appearances in various television shows, Devi has also been making strides online with her vlogs, where she shares different facets of her life and special occasions. While her videos have mostly been lighthearted and colourful, Devi has shared a new vlog opening up about a dark phase she recently went through, marked by serious health issues.
Revealing that she was hospitalised due to Hepatitis A for about two weeks, during Onam season, Devi said in her vlog, “We initially thought it was a minor shortness of breath. It was only upon reaching the hospital that it was identified as Hepatitis A. My liver enzymes had increased significantly. I was in the ICU. After two weeks of hospitalisation, I am now almost recovered.”
Sitting next to her husband, singer Kishore Varma, she shared, “When I had Covid-19, I thought that was the worst it could get. Six months later, I contracted H1N1, which made Covid seem milder in comparison. Now, after going through Hepatitis A, I feel this has been the most severe of the three.”
“Everyone asked where I got the illness from. I hadn’t travelled anywhere alone. I went to Munnar; everyone was there. After that, I had a function in Mumbai; I had people with me then, too. After that, I went for a shoot; I wasn’t alone there either. Perhaps because of my ‘super immunity,’ I was the only one who got sick. I was a little sad that only I got sick,” Devi said.
“She was admitted on the night of the 26th of last month. Back then, she lay curled up like a leech. No talking and no getting up. She vomited whenever she tried to get up to eat. It was a very bad situation. Both her eyes and body had turned yellow. Her bilirubin levels dropped to just 18, while her liver enzymes skyrocketed past 6,000,” Kishore said, detailing her condition.
While Devi Chandana expressed that she was hurt by the reactions of those who trivialised her serious condition as “just jaundice,” Kishore reminded everyone that diseases affect each person differently. Besides advising rest for one and a half months, doctors have also instructed her to take long-term precautions to prevent recurrence of the disease. Devi is currently following a strict diet, avoiding salt, oil, and coconut. The couple reminded everyone to be careful about the food and water they have during travel.
Devi Chandana, who became dear to the audience through comedy skits, later transitioned to the mini-screen and then to the big screen. She is also known for her performances in soap operas like Pournamithinkal and Vasanthamallika.
