As eagerly as Mohanlal fans awaited the arrival of May 21 to celebrate his 64th birthday, cinephiles had also been counting down towards the day, hoping that a new update on L2: Empuraan would arrive. And needless to say, director Prithviraj Sukumaran did not disappoint Lal fans as the film’s team unveiled his character’s first-look poster on Tuesday, setting social media ablaze immediately.
Serving as the second instalment in a planned trilogy following the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, Empuraan will see Mohanlal reprising his role as Khureshi-Ab’raam aka Stephen Nedumpally, and the new poster suggests that Prithviraj has significantly expanded the scale and scope of this sequel compared to its predecessor.
Unlike Lucifer’s first-look poster, which featured Mohanlal, alone, sporting white attire and an intense look, Empuraan’s poster depicts him in all-black, exuding the aura and swagger of a mafia boss. While Lucifer’s poster hinted that Stephen had buried his darker side beneath a peaceful facade, Empuraan’s poster reveals that Khureshi-Ab’raam, the devil within, has now been unleashed.
The poster shows him walking towards the camera, flanked by armed bodyguards holding machine guns. The entire colour palette of the poster consists mostly of black and grey, highlighting the explosiveness one can expect from the movie.
Earlier in the day, director-actor Prithviraj had shared a photo of himself with Mohanlal, seemingly from the sets of Empuraan itself, wishing the actor a happy birthday. It was in November last year that the team shared the movie’s first look, taking the internet by storm.
Penned by Murali Gopy, Empuraan also stars Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sai Kumar, Baiju Santhosh, Saniya Iyappan, and Sachin Khedekar, all reprising their roles from Lucifer. The new movie is being jointly produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions and will hit the screens next year. Besides Malayalam, Empuraan will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages as well.
