Empuraan box office collection day 10: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial, Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, is the biggest Malayalam film ever made. So it was bound to attract eyeballs. Even as the movie draws attention for controversial reasons, it continues to perform well at the domestic box office. If the current rate is maintained, Empuraan will soon cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India.
On its second Saturday, the film earned Rs 3.50 crore across all four languages. That’s a minor step up from its Friday collection of Rs 2.9 crore. However, Empuraan hasn’t picked up drastically during its second week. In fact, it earned more daily through the week, with its biggest draw on Monday at Rs 11.15 crore.
As per trade tracker Sacnilk, the total domestic box office collection of Empuraan after 10 days stands at Rs 94.65 crore. The Malayalam version has the lion’s share in this figure, followed by Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. In the Hindi market, Empuraan has been facing stiff competition from AR Murugadoss’ action drama Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, which released on the occasion of his staple festival Eid.
Empuraan is a few crores shy of hitting the Rs 100 crore mark domestically, a feat for a Malayalam film. But it has a long way before it can surpass the unprecedented box office collection of last year’s Malayalam blockbuster, Manjummel Boys, which stands at Rs 141.61 crore. It will face fresh competition from Bazooka, Alappuzha Gymkhana and Maranamass in Malayalam, Jaat in Hindi, and Good Bad Ugly in Tamil from this week.
However, Empuraan continues to grow slowly and surely despite the controversy surrounding depiction of violence in certain scenes. The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches at offices of Gokulam Gopalan, one of the producers of Empuraan, and some others as part of an alleged foreign exchange violation case. The searches were undertaken in Chennai and Kochi under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). On Saturday, Prithviraj also got a notice from the Income Tax department, which sought clarification regarding the money he made from three films that he starred in in 2022 — Jana Gana Mana, Gold, and Kaduva. The actor is expected to respond by April 29.

Empuraan, the second part of Prithviraj’s 2019 directorial debut Lucifer, a trilogy planned by the Prithviraj-Mohanlal team, has become a topic of hot debate over its critique of right-wing politics and the covert mention of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Mohanlal recently expressed regret over the raging row and assured that the controversial portions would be removed from the movie. Consequently, 24 voluntary cuts have been made, including changing a card stating the timeline of “2002 – India” to “a few years ago” and the antagonist’s name from Baba Bajrangi (an alleged allusion to Gujarat riots convict Babu Bajrangi) to Baldev.
