The Kerala High Court provided the much-needed relief to Dileep, the embattled movie star of Malayalam cinema, on Tuesday. The court granted him bail in the actress abduction and alleged sexual assault case under strict conditions, sending his fans into a celebratory mood.

A large number of fans gathered outside the Aluv Sub Jail, where Dileep has been lodged in since his arrest and celebrated the news by distributing sweets and raising pro-Dileep slogans.

The Kerala High Court has ordered the actor to surrender his passport and produce a bond of Rs 1 lakh along with two personal sureties to secure bail. When jail Superintendent of Aluva sub-jail told Dileep about the court’s ruling in favour of his bail petition, the actor said, “I am happy to have received the bail finally.”

The latest development in the sensational case has received mixed reactions. While fans and some industry friends of Dileep were finally happy to see his fifth attempt to secure bail becoming a success, some have expressed reservations.

Music composer Gopi Sunder said he was really happy for Dileep. “I did music for Ramaleela. After the release of the very film we have worked together, Dileep used to call me after watching it in theatre and wish me. But, he couldn’t call me this time due to his circumstances,” he told indianexpress.com

“I’m really waiting for him to come out and watch the film and give me a call,” he added. When he was asked will he be going to meet Dileep soon, he said he was out of the country until October 8.

National Award-winning film editor Beena Paul was not surprised about Dileep being granted bail. “When I heard the news I thought this was to happen,” she said. “This is the course of the law.”

As the head of the newly formed Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), she also made her position clear on the case. “We are not blaming Dileep for the crime. Our point is this: the law should be followed and the victim should get justice and closure,” she added.

Liberty Basheer, head of Theatre Owners Association, whose bitter relationship with Dileep is no secret, questioned as to why the actor’s fans were celebrating. “He (Dileep) was kept in jail for 85 days, so that means the case against him was strong,” Liberty Basheer said according to a report in The News Minute.

Dileep was arrested on July 10 following repeated questioning by the police. He was charged with several counts, including conspiracy and gang-rape. He was accused of hiring the gang led by Pulsar Suni to kidnap and torment a woman actor to settle his personal scores.

After his arrest, Dileep’s bail petition was rejected four times citing his court in the industry which he may use to influence the investigation. Finally, after nearly spending three months in jail, the movie star will walk out.
