The first trailer of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Aadujeevitham was released on Friday. Aadujeevitham is director Blessy’s screen adaptation of Benyamin’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name. The film is said to be based on a true story and explores the theme of modern slavery.

The three-minute trailer, with stunning visuals, introduces the audience to a Keralite migrant worker Najeeb (Prithviraj), who left his family and village to find work. But he eventually ends up herding goats in the Saudi Arabian desert for survival. He is joined by Jean-Louis’ Ibrahim in his quest for freedom. What stands out in the trailer is Prithviraj’s jaw-dropping transformation to play Najeeb. For the survival drama, the actor lost around 24 kgs to fit the part.

Aadujeevitham has been filmed in Algeria, Jordan and India. After wrapping the film’s shoot, Prithviraj had shared a few pictures from the sets of the movie and had written, “14 years, a thousand obstacles, a million challenges, three waves of a pandemic…one spectacular vision!”

The production of Aadujeevitham was interrupted due to the outbreak of Covid-19. The cast and crew of the movie were left stranded in an isolated part of Wadi Rum desert in Jordan as the world went into lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus. The film crew had no means to return to India for about three months. In May 2020, Prithviraj and the other crew members flew back to India from Amman on a repatriation flight organised by the Indian government.

Talking about the film, director Blessy told Deadline, “I have to pinch myself frequently to remember that it is not just a film, it is the true story of someone’s life. A story of a simple dream for a better life gone awry. It is a tragedy that the innocent do frequently get taken advantage of. But what egged me the last nine years to make this film is because the story to me was not in this tragedy. It was in the strength of the human spirit that I saw, to survive all odds, and to somehow get back to what Najeeb held sacred through his tortured, addled mind.”

Aadujeevitham also stars Amala Paul. Academy Award winner AR Rahman has composed the music for the movie.

The makers are yet to announce the release date of Aadujeevitham.
