Even when digital platforms were flooded with web series from Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, the Malayalam industry was conspicuous by its absence. However, over the last year, they are gradually compensating for the absence with a steady stream of quality products. The latest to join this impressive list is director Najeem Koya’s 1000 Babies, which marks the fifth Malayalam web series to stream on Disney Plus Hotstar. The makers on Friday released a one-minute teaser of the series, and have managed to pique the audience’s interest in becoming a part of this eerie-looking world that perfectly sets the stage for a intriguing crime thriller.
Headlined by Neena Gupta and Rahman, 1000 Babies also stars Sanju Sivaram, Ashwin Kumar, Adil Ibrahim, Shaju Sreedhar, and Sreekanth Balachandran among others. The series, backed by Shaji Nadesan and Arya, is set to be one of the most expansive series made by the streaming giant. With filming happening in multiple locations, including various places in Kerala, 1000 Babies is written by Najeem and Arouz Irfan.

The teaser presents a bleak picture of a dilapidated hospital, a serious investigator, bloody pregnancies, and a wizened woman at the centre of it all.
The Malayalam series is expected to be released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. Neena Gupta, who has developed quite a stellar repertoire in the OTT space, isn’t new to Malayalam. She has previously starred in the films Vasthuhara (1991) and Aham (1992). 1000 Babies marks her return to the industry, albeit in the long format in the digital space.
