FX on Hulu’s The Bear made history at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards after sweeping 11 awards, the highest by any comedy series. With 23 nominations, it also surpassed actor and producer Tina Fey’s hugely popular satirical sitcom 30 Rock, which had got 22.
Despite being classified as a comedy series — a decision the creators had taken while enrolling the show at the Emmy — the show is full of intense dramatic moments that feel visceral due to its brilliant cinematography and direction.
Director of the show, Christopher Storer, who rose to popularity for co-directing several of standup comedian Bo Burnham’s comedy specials, shared the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series award at the 2024 Emmys with Ramy Youssef for Honeydew.
Storer, who has won three Emmys so far for the show, is also the writer and co-showrunner for The Bear. Similarly, Andrew Wehde won the Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour) for the episode “Forks”.
In The Bear, we follow Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a world-class chef, as he returns to his hometown of Chicago to run his family sandwich restaurant — The Beef — after his brother Michael “Mikey” Berzatto (Jon Bernthal), who kills himself, leaves it knee-deep in debt. The show explores the dizzying nervousness of working in a restaurant kitchen, especially when the bills stack up and people are a handful to work with.
Carmy, the ship’s stoic captain, tries hard to infuse Michelin-level standards into an operation that his late brother ran like a headless chicken. Famous for his role as the academically gifted delinquent Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in the dramedy Shameless, White plays a similar “pained genius” in The Bear, a role that won him the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at Emmy in 2023 and 2024.
Obsessive, highly skilful and aloof, White as Carmy embodies the despondency that accompanies the tragic death of a family member, riddled with addiction, due to suicide.
In his bid to turn the old rusty The Beef into a world-class restaurant, Carmy entrusts Syndey “Syd” Adamu, a talented young chef, who helps him realise this by working as the Chef de Cuisine of the restaurant. Adamu had won in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category of the 2023 Emmy and several other awards for her role as the determined Syd
Another repeat winner from The Bear is Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays the everyman Richard “Richie” Jerimovich and the late Mikey’s best friend.
Moss-Bachrach won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category twice, in 2023 and 2024 for his role of Richie, whose character arc takes him from being a fervent and soulful, yet insecure post-divorce stubborn man with pent-up issues to a man who makes the best of the cards dealt to him.
Actor Liza Colón-Zayas as the sardonic Tina Marrero won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmy’s. It’s no surprise that the show has a stellar ensemble of stars: it also won the Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.
In addition, Bernthal won the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for the estranged but warm role of Mikey and Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Donna Berzatto, the troubled mother of the Berzatto siblings, won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
