Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have called it quits, this time for good, multiple sources told PEOPLE on Wednesday. The couple, who have been in an eight-year on-and-off relationship, reportedly reached a point where things just couldn’t be fixed. The Madame Web actor and the Coldplay frontman first got together in 2017. Although they tried to keep their relationship private, they were spotted together on numerous occasions over the years. They were seen out and about in Mumbai during Coldplay’s tour in India.
Following reports of their split, a source told The US Sun that two major issues kept coming up in their relationship: the age gap and the topic of having kids. “Dakota has been desperate for her and Chris to work out for years, and every time they broke up, she was devastated and in tears,” the insider said. According to them, the actor wants to embrace motherhood; however, Chris, who already shares two grown-up kids, Apple and Moses, with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, wasn’t on the same page anymore. “She really loves him and his children, and he deeply loves her, but things were just never lining up for them, and it was very up and down,” they added.
As one insider put it, “They made some beautiful memories as a family, but it was very up and down. They really tried to work through their issues, but the age gap was often a problem. And it’ll be hard for both of them to move on after such a long relationship, but they will do it.” The couple has reportedly agreed to end things on good terms and focus on their respective careers going forward. On the work front, the singer has a busy schedule due to Coldplay’s ongoing Music of the Spheres tour, and Dakota is packed with the promotional events of her upcoming film Materialists, starring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, while promoting the movie, Dakota got candid about how people view relationships. “Why is divorce bad? Why do people have to get married at a certain age or only once?” she asked. “It doesn’t matter.” Her view seems to reflect where she’s at now, more reflective, open, and aware that relationships don’t always end up as planned. “For a long time, we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When should people get married.” She continued, “Why do people have to get married, or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”
The actor opened up about her close bond with Chris and his kids, “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.” When asked about how she feels about motherhood, she said, “We’re not here for very long, so if I’m meant to be a mother, bring it on.” Even Chris’s ex-wife, Gwyneth, who attended her 30th birthday party, gave her blessing, saying that she absolutely adores her. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.”
Chris and Dakota first sparked dating rumours in 2017. In 2018, they made several public appearances together and even got matching tattoos. In 2019, they briefly called it quits but reconciled just two months later. Between 2020–2024, there were rumours of them secretly getting engaged, but their reps always denied it.
