Playback singer Kunal Ganjawala lamented that he would never be able to sing under musical geniuses like R D Burman,Salil Choudhury or S D Burman, saying he pined for the creative atmosphere of that era.
“Think about that golden age when Panchamda (R D Burman) and Salilda were in full flow, and it will remain my alltime regret not to have been able to sing to the tunes set by those greats,” Ganjawala, who was in the city to attend the music launch of Bengali film ‘Macho Mustafa’,told PTI.
Along with Bollywood assignments,Ganjawala has also made quite a name for himself in Bengali playback singing. However,he said,he would not be satisfied with his Bengal experience till he cut a Rabindra Sangeet album.
“I very much want to make a Rabindra Sangeet album. I have heard many of our Tagore song exponents and am struck by the rich imagery, the words and the tunes. I want to pay my tribute to the Bard.”
He was, however, not sure if anybody would come forward to produce the album.
Kunal, who had sung over 70 modern Bengali film numbers, said he had found the Bengali ‘kalakars’ very rich in intellectual content.
“People of regions like Bengal,Gujarat,Maharashtra and Kerala are very culturally rich, boasting of rich traditions.”
He said he knew Shantanu (Moitra) for years and would love to do more work with him.
Talking about the current crop of Bengali singer-composers,he said,”I find Jeet Ganguly very receptive and talented. I catch Bengali telly programmes also. I can follow the language, but can’t speak,” he said.
Asked about his other regional stints,Kunal said he had sung many playback numbers for Kannada films, some for Assamese and Oriya films as well.
About his two numbers in ‘Macho Mustafa’,Kunal said he really liked the tunes set by Samidh Mukherjee. ”In fact,I like all the six songs in the film and once you listen to these tracks you will know why,” he said.
Kunal, whose ‘Bheege Honth Tere’ number of the 2004 superhit film ‘Murder’ catapulted him to stardom, agrees it has still remained a rage.
“Look, presently most songs suffer from overkill due to multiple media formats where you can listen to them, see clips and download unlike the songs in the earlier age when there was no so much media explosion.”
“There was just this ‘chitrahar’ on DD,so the songs won’t get repeated over and over again and enjoyed a better lifespan,” he said.
Kunal worked for music directors like Anu Malik,Pritam,Himesh Reshammiya,Ismail Darbar,Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy,Anand Raaj Anand,Roop Kumar Rathod,Daboo Malik, and Sanjeev-Darshan among others.
Asked if talent search contests can really help youngsters and children,he said things had now come to a saturation point.
“We need to change the format and I wish to talk to the people associated with the channels in this regard,” Kunal, who had been one of the judges in two primetime talent shows on national channels earlier, said.
