‘Haider,Happy New Year,PK’ – PLAY looks ahead for the movies to watch out for in year 2014.
Haider:
Whenever Vishal Bhardwaj drank Shakespeare,he evolved a terrific cinematic language, adding doses of colloquialism and gritty drama. With Haider,Bhardwaj is bringing Hamlet with Shahid Kapoor,Shraddha Kapoor, and the mighty duo of Tabu and Irrfan Khan. We are prepared to experience a range of emotions, from overwhelming grief to seething rage.
Why so serious? Thats what a Farah Khan film asks moviegoers. Known for the films that celebrate Bollywood pomp and splendour, her new film has her favourite Shah Rukh Khan again, with Deepika Padukone,Boman Irani and Abhishek Bachchan, among others. A musical heist, for sure.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshi: Rajit Kapur as the dhoti-clad Bengali detective brings warm memories of our Doordarshan days. Now Dibakar Banerjee has taken the baton to bring the sleuth to the big screen. Sushant Singh Rajput after a promising 2013,under Banerjees able direction searching for clues,is a promise we would pay any price for.
P.K.: Raj Kumar Hirani is perhaps the only director who can bridge the divide between the mass and the class. Though largely shrouded in secrecy, his new film with Aamir Khan seems like the satire we all are waiting for, especially when it comes after 3 Idiots.
Untitled Mary Kom Biopic: Priyanka Chopra is playing boxer MC Mary Kom in this biopic. A film that mixes sports and biopic,we hope it doesnt take on the usual Bollywood cloak of song and dance.
Bombay Velvet: A massive budget period film recreating the jazz age of Mumbai when it was known as Bombay, this film has Ranbir Kapoor playing a boxer, with Karan Johar playing a key acting role. With Anurag Kashyap at the helm of affairs, this film has the promise to offer glimpses into the evolution of the island city into Indias
biggest metropolis.
Dedh Ishqiya: Though Aaja Nachle was damp squib,we havent lost hope. The team of Ishqiya, which had Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi at the top of their game,is bringing Madhuri Dixit in the sequel of the hinterland drama as the shrewd Begum Para. We are hopeful that
Abhishek Chaubey will do justice to the combo of
talent, beauty and grace we know as Madhuri Dixit. Shayari intended.
