When Rekha ran to hug Jaya Bachchan as Amitabh Bachchan won Best Actor award, shocked fans

Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan, who have shared the screen together in several films including Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Mr Natwarlal, and Ganga Ki Saugandh. The three of them appeared together in Yash Chopra’s Silsila (1981), which also marked the last time Amitabh and Rekha, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated pairs, shared the screen. The romantic drama, which tanked upon release, had created many headlines due to speculations linking its narrative to the rumoured real-life affair between its stars.

In an interview with Simi Garewal in 2004, when Rekha was asked if she was ever in love with Amitabh Bachchan, the actress said, “Absolutely”. She further explained, “Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be signed out? What do I deny? I am not in love with him? Of course I am. You take all the world in the love and then add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.”

However, in the same interview, she also clarified that they were never in a relationship. She said, “There was never a personal connection with him, that’s the truth. Never ever. There was no truth to the controversies and speculation.”

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan never entertained such questions.
